When 10 Just Isn’t Loud Enough. Introducing the LPB-1+ Booster Circuit.

There are times when you can use a little boost. A little more volume. Even if you have a boost on your pedal board, the room or the band just seems a bit louder, and you can’t cut through.

Or perhaps you like to have a minimal board and there isn’t room for a boost. Or maybe you’re at a jam and all you have is your guitar and an amp.

There are lots of reasons to have an onboard preamp that you can rely on to give you more volume, or to act as another channel on your amp.

Options

With an LPB-1 + from Five Cats installed in your guitar, you have the ability to boost your signal up to about 20dB. But there is more than one way to install it.

  1. Using the trimpot, you can set and forget and activate the circuit with a push/pull.
  2. Instead of a push pull, have an easier to use toggle switch.
  3. Add or replace an unused pot (like that second tone) and use it to adjust the gain.
  4. Use that extra pot to adjust the gain without using a switch. Just turn it to zero when you don’t need it.
  5. How about adding GAIN as an option on a five way lever switch?

Installation

The LPB1 + is based on the classic EHX pedal and is tiny enough to fit in most control cavities. In most cases, it can just sit on top of a volume or tone pot. There might not be enough room to tuck a 9V battery in there too, but adding a separate battery box is straightforward. Hidden away on the back of your guitar, it’s easy to get to when you need to change the battery.

If you’re worried about batteries running out mid-song, just use rechargeables and make sure you use a fresh one before each gig and carry a spare. It just takes a bit more organising.

Installation is simple and clean. And at £125 (including battery box), it’s the same price as a new pickup.
